About the forum
With these forum discussions we hope to further expand scholarly conversations on both teaching and research. Currently we are hosting forums on the child labor photography of Lewis Wickes Hine (in two parts) and on Chinese Exclusion. Several future forums will focus upon major online resources, beginning with “Gilded Age Plains City: The Great Sheedy Murder Trial and the Booster Ethos of Lincoln, Nebraska,” directed by Timothy R. Mahoney at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
In form the forums will usually resemble those published in the print version of JGAPE. Initially the editors will choose topics and invite experts on the subject to open the discussion and to reply (selectively) to subscribers’ contributions. Anyone who registers through this site can participate. The editors hope you will weigh in early and often. We also hope that you will suggest topics for future forums. We want you to shape these conversations.
Online forums offer some obvious advantages.
· There is no limit to the number of participants or to the length of their contributions, which can be as brief as a sentence or as long as a monograph.
· Contributors can include links, and assorted media files. The Gilded Age/Progressive Era witnessed an unprecedented expansion of media. Historians of the period are making increasing use of stereopticon slides, phonographs, movies, and radio in both our teaching and our research.
We have just redesigned our forum page, a part of an overall overhaul of our online site. We think it is friendly to use and easy to navigate. But we expect that you will have suggestions for how we can make it better.
